How Important Is It to Get an Annual Flu Vaccination?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to protect yourself and others from becoming sick from a flu infection is to get your flu shot every year. For most people, just the benefit of skipping several days or even weeks of misery is enough of an incentive to get vaccinated against the flu. However, for some people, a bout with the flu can lead to serious complications and even hospitalization. Even if you’re not at risk of developing serious symptoms, getting your annual flu shot can help prevent this virus from spreading and infecting those who are more vulnerable.

Who Should Get a Flu Shot?

Generally, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older be vaccinated against the flu. Different flu shots are approved for people of different ages. You should tell your health care provider about any allergies you have, especially to eggs, and whether you’ve had an allergic reaction to any previous flu vaccine before getting another one. You should also let your medical practitioner know if you’re not feeling well when you report for your flu shot.

Finally, anyone with a history of Guillain-Barré Syndrome should not get a flu shot.
