Widely considered to be the gold standard in SARS-CoV-2 detection, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing can detect genetic material specific to COVI9-19 within days of infection, even if symptoms are not present. As compared to the rapid antigen test, the turnaround time for the PCR test is longer, with the results typically available within 24 to 36 hours. However, the PCR test is generally more sensitive than the rapid antigen test, which means it is less likely to produce a false negative result.

3.      Antibody Testing

Instead of detecting an active infection, antibody testing is used to detect a prior infection. Specifically, antibody testing checks a blood sample for certain antibodies produced by the body’s immune system in response to a COVID-19 exposure. A positive result is significant because it may suggest some level of protection against reinfection.
